Not Working

Stories from American Workers

Indianapolis

I was a bit nervous heading into our time in Indianapolis, mainly because I knew we could only be here over the weekend. It’s a lot harder to contact folks by email and phone over the weekend but in the end we had a packed scheduled. And a free place to stay.

Before we arrived, I had been on the phone a couple of times with Judy Wolf, who was laid off from the Indianapolis Star last month after a 24-year career as a copy editor at the paper. Before we had even met face to face she agreed to let me interview her and, what’s more, let Mallery, MJ, and me stay in her home.

Maybe it’s just because I live in New York City but on this trip I have been consistently surprised (and humbled) by how many people are immediately open without a trace of suspicion. In my daily life I don’t give away my free time to perfect strangers. I certainly don’t give my couch to perfect strangers. But I’m meeting a lot of folks like Judy who, despite their own trials, do just that. I am humbled and grateful.

In addition to Judy, I also met Jenny Elig, a former features writer who was also laid off from the Star. I interviewed both of them at the Circle City Industrial Complex, a terrific collective of artist workspaces and galleries. We were hosted by Wug Laku, who not only made the space available but also introduced us to Nancy Lee, who was laid off back in 2008. Thanks to Wug and Nancy for being so open.

Last but not least, thanks to Kelly Graham-MacDonald, a social worker who was laid off last year. An amazing woman who did amazing work. The city of Indianapolis, I believe, is diminished by the loss of the program she ran and the care she provided for numerous mentally-challenged adults.

We’ve put up a new video of Wendy Hamilton. We met Wendy back in Omaha. She’s worked in the non-profit sector, mostly in development. As you’ll see she’s an extremely bright and engaging person itching for an opportunity to once again prove herself professionally.

Onward.
